in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
Now we are going to look at the second influence mentioned in this verse, which is our adversary Satan, referred to here as the prince of the power of the air. This may seem like an odd name to describe Satan after all isn’t his domain hell? Well, that is a popular misconception. Hell is described in the Bible simply as the holding chamber of un-repentant mankind, until the Day when each individual of humanity will have to account of their life to God. It may well be that Satan has access to that place; it is after all filled with those who have believed his lies. However Satan’s concern is the earth, not realms beneath the earth. He has always worked out his strategy of rebellion against God on the earth and amongst the people of the earth. In order to do this he has claimed a higher position than those on the earth by making his domain the firmament or the sky. The most tried and tested strategy of battle is to secure the high ground; whoever has that ground is at a distinct advantage. So it is with our enemy Satan, he is rightfully called the prince of the power of the air, since it is from here that he plots and schemes and weaves his web of deception across the face of the earth. He achieves this by wielding power over the fallen angels who followed him in his original rebellion against God Most High when he was ejected from the third heaven which is God’s throne, to the first heaven – earth’s atmosphere. Jesus speaking of this event said in Luke 10v18, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”
Now in relation to this we observe an interesting omission in Genesis 1v6-8 which is that God did not bless the second day of creation in which God created the firmament of the sky. We will notice from a reading of each day of creation that God blessed every day at least once by declaring that it was good, but on the second day there was no mention of a blessing. Was this a mistake or a typo? No, God intentionally did not bless the second day because He knew that Satan would take up dominion in that realm, that he would become the prince of the power of the air. This is why Satan could legitimately offer Jesus Christ all the kingdoms of the world in Matthew 4v9, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” So the world system and the kingdoms of this world that we studied yesterday are subject to Satan’s rule, and together with him the vast majority of this world is bent on disobedience and rebellion against God for the prince of the power of the air is working in the sons of disobedience.
However a truth that we have already studied brings all this into perspective for us as believers. It was our study on Day 4 and will be our focus again when we look at verse 6 of this chapter – it is this – that as believers in Christ Jesus we are now positioned with Christ in heavenly places; and as we studied on Day 24 Christ is seated presently at the right Hand of God the Father, “far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church.” (Ephesians 1 v 21-22) So the question here is, who has the high ground now, us or Satan? It is plainly us, and that is why Satan is under our feet! In Christ we have complete authority over Satan and his agents. In fact just after Jesus declared that He saw Satan fall like lightning He went on to say, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10 v 19-20)
This is why our prayers are so important and so effective; it is literally the means by which we claim air superiority over our enemy, vital to all warfare. Paul underlines this positional authority that we have in 2 Corinthians 10v3-5 “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” This form of prayer is the binding and loosing that Jesus spoke of in Matthew 18v18, “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” In Christ then we have positional authority over Satan who is the god of this world and the prince of the power of the air; using the Name of Jesus we have power to bind Satan’s works and to loose the resources of the kingdom of God. So in prayer we can bind unbelief, doubt, worry and sickness in people’s lives and loose faith, hope, repentance and wisdom. This is why the prayers of the Church are so needful and so powerful. So let us not allow ourselves to get discouraged when see the evil works of our enemy destroying our families, friends, communities and even our nation. But let us instead rise up in faith and exercise our God given authority through our prayers and our witness to bind the works of Satan and to loose the Kingdom of God.
OUR PRAYER TODAY
Heavenly Father, thank you that you have raised us up positionally to be seated with Christ Who is far above all rule and authority. We acknowledge that You have given us power and authority in Christ to bind and to loose on this earth. Enable us to be faithful to this privileged position, that we would not sit by idly watching our enemy destroy people’s lives but engage in spiritual warfare by our prayers and our witness to see Your Kingdom and Your will be done.
